rebeccaelizabethsmiles asked: Wow! I was going through your blog and it just reminded me of how I've always wanted to be in the wedding industry, whether it be planning or photography or anything, but I've always cast it aside as a pipe dream. I'm from a small town, but I'm also pursuing my communications degree (My name is Becky too which I thought was kind of funny) and I was just wondering if you had any advice on getting to where you are in the business.
Hi! Sorry it took me so long to get to your message… I have hardly had time for tumblr lately. But, that’s so awesome! Sounds like we have a lot of similarities. :)
As far as advice… the main thing I always tell everyone is to get hooked up with an internship. I have been with Moxie Events for almost a year now, and through them I am planning + coordinating a wedding this August!!! I am so excited + nervous, and this opportunity would have never came along if not for my internship.
Also, connect with local wedding pros in your area… once I started blogging on BT&B I became a member of TWIPS (twitter wedding inspiration pals), and have connected with many wedding pros and bloggers across the country. The connections and relationships that you build in the industry will take you far and will ultimately help you get referrals.
Once I graduate college in December I am going to complete an online wedding + event planner certification course, which I also recommend doing. Still trying to figure out which one I’ll be doing, but once I complete that I am going to start working on branding + marketing and will hopefully get my business off to a start within the next two years!
If you’re seriously considering a career in the wedding industry, just go for it!! It’s definitely one of the most rewarding and fun careers in my opinion, and I am SOO excited for my future. :)
Good luck with everything Becky!! If you ever want to chat or have questions you can email me at email@example.com (and that goes for the rest of you guys, too!)
